There’s a lot of scary things happening all around us right now.
How should we be acting and living, as Christians, right now? During all the scandal and worry and injustice and anti-God attitudes that surround us?
“This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: but the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.”
There will be scoffers. There will be those who deny the return of Christ. There will be those who walk after their own lusts. There will be those who are wilfully ignorant that God created the heavens and the earth and then destroyed them by a flood. There will be those who deny any judgement and settling of accounts. There will be those who deny God completely and utterly and seek to efface Him from everything. We have been warned.
“And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”
There will be wars, famines, pestilences, earthquakes… There will political struggle. There will be troubling rumours. But you are not to be troubled (“Disturbed; agitated; afflicted; annoyed; molested.”). These things must happen. Worse will come. But—
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
The Lord is returning. He is true to His promises. He does not see time as we do. He waits patiently. He is not willing that any should perish. He cares even more than we do for the poor lost souls groping in the darkness around us. He is not willing that the worst of them should die.
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
The Lord’s return will be unexpected. This earth, and all the works in it, will be burned by fire. Do not be discouraged by the ways of this world. Look to a new heaven and earth where righteousness shall reign. Remember that all your works will be destroyed. These things are not your priority. Live for Heaven, not for the earth. Put your heart and your treasures up above. Turn your eyes once more to what is truly important: seeking the lost and telling them of Christ Jesus.
“Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.”
Focus on remembering what the Bible says. Focus on God’s commandments. Focus on being holy. On living a holy and Godly life. Be diligent. Live in peace. Be spotless and blameless. Read your Bible. Pray. Go to church. Be wary. There will be those who twist the scriptures, to their own destruction. Be steadfast. Grow in grace. Grow in knowledge. Live like a Christian. That is your duty in these times.
“Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for My name’s sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.”
You will be hated. You will be afflicted. You will be in personal danger. You may even be killed. People will be offended. Traitorous. Hateful. Deceived. False prophets will abound. Iniquity will abound. Many will let their love grow cold.
But not you.
Endure to the end. Keep loving, no matter what. God will still be in control and He will deliver you.
And no matter what the world says—no matter what the politicians say—no matter what the powers say—the gospel WILL be preached in ALL the world.
Be a part of those who keep preaching in all the world.
Your God is with you.
He knows the end and He has warned you of it.
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
“Let all your things be done with charity.”
“Abstain from all appearance of evil.”
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.”
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
“Be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; holding forth the word of life;”
“If ye love Me, keep my commandments.”
“Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
