Fear & Truth

The other day I put down my phone after scrolling through social media. I was feeling weary and anxious after seeing dozens of posts warning about how terrible the world was getting. All of a sudden a thought rushed into my head.

Why is the fearmongering that washes over my social media feed and even in my texts and group chats all from Christians?

Why is it that God’s people are the ones who are full of anxiety?

The world is getting more and more sick and twisted. It is rejecting God wholly and utterly. We know all that. We know what is happening.

But we don’t need to fear it.

Jesus burst those chains 2,000 years ago. He freed us from all anxiety over the future by giving us forever with Him.

Christians must stand up and speak the truth. Yes. But Christians do not need to live in fear of what is happening nor spread that fear.

Our God foretold us the future. We know what will happen. We can have perfect assurance in Him.

Let all the nations be gathered together,
and let the people be assembled:
who among them can declare this,
and shew us former things?

let them bring forth their witnesses, that they may be justified:
or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord,
and my servant whom I have chosen:
that ye may know and believe me,
and understand that I am he:
before me there was no God formed,
neither shall there be after me.
I, even I, am the Lord;
and beside me there is no saviour.
I have declared, and have saved,
and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you:
therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, that I am God
.

Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel,
and his redeemer the Lord of hosts;
am the first, and I am the last;
and beside me there is no God.
And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it,
and set it in order for me,
since I appointed the ancient people?
and the things that are coming, and shall come,
let them shew unto them.
Fear ye not, neither be afraid:
have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it?
ye are even my witnesses.
Is there a God beside me?
yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Tell ye, and bring them near;
yea, let them take counsel together:
who hath declared this from ancient time?
who hath told it from that time?
have not I the Lord?

and there is no God else beside me;
a just God and a Saviour;
there is none beside me.

I strongly encourage you to read Isaiah right now. What a beautiful book. Over and over it reminds us that GOD is in control and He reigns, and what He wills will come to pass!

Thus saith the Lord, thy redeemer,
and he that formed thee from the womb,
I am the Lord that maketh all things;
that stretcheth forth the heavens alone;
that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;
that frustrateth the tokens of the liars,
and maketh diviners mad;
that turneth wise men backward,
and maketh their knowledge foolish;
that confirmeth the word of his servant,
and performeth the counsel of his messengers
.

The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying,
Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass;
and as I have purposed, so shall it stand
:

Remember the former things of old:
for I am God, and there is none else;
I am God, and there is none like me,
declaring the end from the beginning,
and from ancient times the things that are not yet done,
saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

calling a ravenous bird from the east,
the man that executeth my counsel from a far country:
yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass;
I have purposed it, I will also do it.

He knows us, He knows our way, He loves us, and He will care for us.

Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob,
and all the remnant of the house of Israel,
which are borne by me from the belly,
which are carried from the womb:
and even to your old age I am he;
and even to hoar hairs will I carry you:
I have made, and I will bear;
even I will carry, and will deliver you.

With all these wonderful truths, why aren’t Christians standing up and proclaiming JOY and PEACE and ASSURANCE right now?

Why aren’t we reaching out to the fearful and hurting instead of cowering in our little houses, hoping to not be touched by the impending evil?

Why are we shutting up because we’re afraid that we will be MADE to shut up?

Why are we retreating before we are actually FORCED to retire?

As long as we CAN do good, let us work!

Let us arise and PROCLAIM who our God is and what He gives! Let us claim the peace and joy He gives us! Let us remember that he warned us, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”

(There are dozens of verses on that. Look is up. This list is ESV but it’s a good start.)

Let us remember that He told us, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

(There are dozens of verses on that too.)

Let us remember what He said and let us be bold to proclaim it.

Let us live as Jesus did. Let us remember what the future holds: eternity in Heaven.

Let us not fear. Let us lift our heads and look to heaven, knowing our redemption draweth nigh.

  1. Amen! This is very encouraging!

    It’s tough to battle fear and anxiety, and it is easy to let them overcome us. Instead of letting it rule our lives, we need to fight it with Truth and claim the victory.
